Recreational Insurance in Wisconsin

Summer means ATVs on wooded trails through Polk County. Fall means UTVs cutting through fields outside of New Richmond before hunting season. Winter means snowmobiles tracing groomed routes across St. Croix County, deep into the Northwoods around our Park Falls office, and up into northern Minnesota. If you live in Wisconsin or Minnesota, recreational vehicles are not just toys. They are part of how you live here. And the right recreational insurance policy is what keeps that lifestyle protected no matter the season.

What Does Recreational Insurance Cover?

Recreational insurance is an umbrella term for policies that cover off-road and specialty vehicles that standard auto or homeowners policies typically exclude. At B&B Insurance Services, we help riders and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the New Richmond area find coverage for:

  • ATVs and UTVs – All-terrain vehicles and utility terrain vehicles used on trails, private land, and recreational areas across Wisconsin and Minnesota
  • Snowmobiles – Seasonal coverage for sleds used on Wisconsin DNR permitted trails and Minnesota grant-in-aid snowmobile routes
  • Dirt Bikes and Off-Road Motorcycles – Coverage for non-street-legal bikes used on private property and off-road riding areas
  • Golf Carts and Low-Speed Vehicles – Protection for golf carts used on community roads, campgrounds, or private property

Does Wisconsin or Minnesota Require Recreational Vehicle Insurance?

Neither Wisconsin nor Minnesota mandates liability insurance for ATVs, UTVs, or snowmobiles at the state level, but that does not mean you are protected without it. In Wisconsin, all ATVs and UTVs that meet the DNR statutory definitions must be registered with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and new 2026 regulations effective June 1 added updated rules for UTV seatbelt requirements, towing restrictions on trails, and window tint restrictions. In Minnesota, virtually all off-highway vehicles, including Class 1 and Class 2 ATVs, off-highway motorcycles, and off-road vehicles, must be registered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources even if you only ride on your own property, and every operator or passenger under 18 must wear a DOT-approved helmet. Snowmobile trail access in both states requires a valid trail permit, and some private trail systems and campgrounds in Wisconsin and Minnesota require proof of liability coverage before entry.

Why Your Homeowners Policy Is Not Enough

One of the most common and costly assumptions we hear from clients is that their homeowners policy covers their ATV or snowmobile. It does not, at least not in any meaningful way. In Wisconsin and Minnesota, homeowners policies may offer very limited coverage for recreational vehicles used strictly on your own property. The moment you ride onto a neighbor's land, a trail system, a road crossing, or a campground, that coverage typically stops. If you cause an accident that injures another rider or damages property, you are personally responsible for every dollar of that claim without a dedicated recreational policy.

Coverage Options for Your Recreational Vehicles

A dedicated recreational vehicle policy can be built to fit exactly how you ride. Coverage options typically include:

  • Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability – Covers injuries or damage you cause to others while operating your recreational vehicle
  • Collision Coverage – Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident with another vehicle, tree, fence, or obstacle
  • Comprehensive Coverage – Covers theft, fire, vandalism, flooding, and weather damage while your vehicle is in storage or on the trail
  • Medical Payments – Covers medical costs for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage – Protects you when another rider causes an accident and has no insurance
  • Accessory and Custom Parts Coverage – Insures winches, plows, lift kits, aftermarket exhausts, and other upgrades not included in a base policy
  • Trailer Coverage – Protects the trailer you use to haul your ATVs or snowmobiles to and from the trails
  • Roadside Assistance – Covers recovery and towing if your vehicle breaks down on the trail or in a remote area
