Commercial Auto Insurance in Wisconsin
If your business owns a vehicle, has employees driving on the clock, or uses a truck to haul tools and equipment to job sites in New Richmond or across Wisconsin and Minnesota, your personal auto policy will not protect you. Personal auto insurance excludes business use, and if an accident happens during a work-related trip without the right coverage in place, your business is on the hook for every dollar. Commercial auto insurance is how you close that gap and stay protected on the road.
Who Needs Commercial Auto Insurance?
If any of the following apply to your business, a commercial auto policy is likely required:
- Your business owns or leases vehicles titled in the company name
- Employees drive company vehicles or their own vehicles for work errands
- You transport goods, materials, or equipment to job sites
- You haul cargo, make deliveries, or operate a fleet of service vehicles
- You use a vehicle to visit clients or travel between work locations
- You operate a vehicle over 10,000 lbs GVWR for business purposes
Wisconsin and Minnesota Commercial Auto Requirements
Wisconsin requires commercial vehicles to carry minimum liability limits of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $10,000 in property damage under Wisconsin Statute 344.62. Uninsured motorist coverage at the same minimums is also required. Minnesota sets higher baseline limits of 30/60/10, meaning $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, and $10,000 in property damage, on every business vehicle under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 65B. Because Minnesota is a no-fault state, commercial auto policies must also carry Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, along with mandatory uninsured motorist coverage. Companies that haul freight or carry passengers for hire under Chapter 221, or that run vehicles rated above 10,000 lbs GVWR, face higher limits still. For businesses operating across state lines or hauling cargo under FMCSA jurisdiction, federal minimums of $750,000 in liability or higher apply regardless of which state you call home.
What a Commercial Auto Policy Covers
A commercial auto policy is built around the same core structure as a personal policy but with higher limits and broader protections designed for business use:
- Liability Coverage – Pays for bodily injury and property damage your business vehicle causes to others
- Collision Coverage – Repairs or replaces your vehicle after an accident, regardless of fault
- Comprehensive Coverage – Covers non-collision events like theft, vandalism, fire, and weather damage
- Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist – Protects your business when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance
- Medical Payments or PIP – Covers medical costs for drivers and passengers in your business vehicle
- Hired and Non-Owned Auto (HNOA) – Covers liability when employees drive their personal vehicles or a rented vehicle for business purposes
